Renovation plan for shophouses along
Six dilapitated heritage shophouses along Kimberley Street belonging to the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) will be refurbished, The Star reported. The units, located in the buffer zone of the George Town World Heritage Site are identified as Category 2 heritage buildings with Early Transitional Style. The buildings are more than a century old and have major damage that needs to be fixed quickly. The cost and time needed to upgrade the units on the 7,061 square feet plot of land cannot be finalised until the dilapitation report is composed.
The six two-storey shophouses would probably be used for traditional trades after refurbishment, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. The refurbishment is a joint effort by the state government, MPPP, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, Think City Sdn Bhd, Penang Heritage Trust and a few more private organisations.
